About the Role

The Streaming team is responsible for ingesting usage events from our clients and operates the core Kafka-based streaming platform that powers all of Metronomes productsfrom pricing and packaging to entitlements and spend reporting. This system processes billions of events per day and needs to perform low-latency streaming computation - Were at the intersection of observability infrastructure and billing. Were scaling rapidly and need engineers who thrive in high-throughput, low-latency, high-stakes environments.

Core Areas of Ownership

You'll take end-to-end ownership of our streaming platform, including:

  • Scalability Ensuring our Kafka-based pipeline can handle rapidly growing volumes (billions of daily events) without breaking a sweat.
  • Correctness & Reliability Guaranteeing every event is processed exactly onceno drops, no duplicatesbecause each one translates to real revenue.
  • Performance Delivering fast, efficient aggregations to support real-time entitlements, spend tracking, and fraud prevention.
  • Cost Efficiency Continuously tuning the platform to minimize infrastructure costs for our customers (and ourselveswere usage-based too).
  • Partner with product engineering teams to enable and extend the platforms capabilities, enabling features like SQL-based custom metrics and real-time spend insights and reporting

What You'll Do

  • Build, scale and evolve our core streaming pipelines capable of processing hundreds of thousands of events per second and enabling high fault tolerance.
  • Design alternative methods of ingesting/processing event data to enable end users to adjust their use cases based on latency and cost factors.
  • Partner with product engineering teams to build new pricing/packaging capabilities and features on top of the usage platform.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience designing and building scalable infrastructure systems whether distributed services, internal platforms, or foundational tooling.
  • Hands-on experience scaling distributed systems , with a deep understanding of performance, reliability, and fault toleranceeither as a senior individual contributor or technical lead.
  • Ownership of mission-critical production systems , with a strong focus on reliability, scalability, observability, and incident response.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills , with a track record of driving solutions across engineering, product, and infrastructure teams.
  • Proven success delivering high-impact projects in fast-paced, high-growth environmentsnavigating ambiguity, managing scope, and consistently landing quality outcomes.
  • Experience mentoring engineers across experience levels , fostering growth through code reviews, design discussions, and technical leadership.
  • Clear and thoughtful technical communication , whether writing design docs, participating in architecture reviews, or sharing context with non-engineering stakeholders.

  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Serverless Framework)
  • Languages (Python, Typescript, Java - for working with Kafka)

Compensation

The estimated base salary range for this role is $171,200 - $214,000. In addition to your base salary, Metronome offers a competitive total rewards package, including but not limited to, market-benched equity, sales incentive pay (for eligible roles), comprehensive health benefits, and other benefits listed below.

The actual base salary will vary based on factors including market value, individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process, and previous experience. The listed range above should serve as a guideline and may be modified at any time.

We believe that compensation reflects the expected impact you will have at the company, relative to the market value of your role. We also conduct an annual pay audit to ensure pay is fair, indexed to market value, and that pay takes into account continued performance at Metronome.
