General Job Summary: This full-time position at Phoenix Grooming Academy is primarily responsible for instructing dog grooming classes for non-credit students. Key duties include instructing students on how to become dog groomers, recruiting students, marketing, and maintaining equipment inventory. A successful candidate must be highly motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision. Additionally, the Instructor will schedule and promote continuing education for local professional dog groomers. While classes are planned during scheduled hours, this role may require some evenings and weekend hours.

Percentage of Time

  • Supervise student groomers during all stages of grooming a dog.
  • Follow the American Kennel Club National Core Professional Dog Grooming Educational Standards.
  • Coordinate and teach the provided curriculum.
  • Evaluate and assess student learning and provide feedback promptly.
  • Maintain appropriate records for students and other agencies.
  • Maintain appropriate communication with customers, instructors, administrators, and other college staff.
  • Maintain equipment and supply inventory records.
  • Collaborate to develop marketing materials to ensure adequate enrollments.
  • Perform routine maintenance for program equipment.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current in the field.
  • Arrange and attend meetings when necessary.
  • Perform other work duties as assigned and requested.
  • Pass the AKC-Coat Type Certification (drop, curly, wire, and jacketed).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Be familiar with first aid for humans and pets; know emergency action protocols to ensure all pets receive care should an emergency arise.
  • Represent Phoenix Grooming Academy in a positive manner to employees, students, and the community.
  • Assume responsibility, address problems effectively, and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.
  • Establish good working relationships with students, staff, clients, and other contacts.
  • Articulate and convey clearly and effectively in oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrate strong human relations skills and the ability to relate to diverse personalities effectively.
  • Be a creative, energetic, and self-motivated individual with leadership and organizational skills.
  • Have a working knowledge of computers and educational media equipment.
  • Make effective and well-received public presentations and consult students and consumers on educational regulations and standards.
  • Complete the AKC-Verified Instructor Pathway, including the Coat Type Certification and the Professional Groomer Credential. Once credentialed, instructors must remain current with the latest industry trends, and innovations to maintain their active educator status and must annually attend petcare industry seminars.

 

Special Demands

The position involves sitting or standing most of the time in an office or classroom/laboratory setting. Constant (70-100%) repetitive motions, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, and viewing various types of close visual work. Frequent (10-30%) stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, and carrying. The position requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently and 100 pounds of force occasionally. Personal vehicle required for travel.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of professional experience in the dog grooming industry. Essential qualifications include the ability to pass an AKC - CT certification as a prerequisite for consideration. Additionally, candidates are encouraged to work towards obtaining a Master Groomer certification, recognized by reputable organizations such as the National Dog Grooming of America Association (NDGAA), International Society of Canine Cosmetologists (ISCC), or American Kennel Club (AKC). This commitment to continuous professional development ensures our instructors maintain the highest standards of expertise in the field, enriching the quality of our dog grooming training programs.

Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Classroom/salon cleaning and disinfecting
  • Inform all students of the location of the groomer and pet first aid kits.
  • Ensure every student has the best education and experience in the industry.
  • Career placement - assist students with job placements before completing the program.
  • Social media - maintain a professional media platform on college domains.

Groomer Salon Duties/Demonstration

  • Receptionist: Schedule/reschedule/prebook dog grooming appointments
  • Arrive before staff hours to open the salon and check in clients.
  • Keep track of updated pet vaccinations utilizing
  • Disinfect daily and follow the cleaning protocols
  • Reminder calls to clients to ensure students have dogs for instruction and practice.
  • Make sure the building is presentable to the public/client/students.
  • Establish relationships with the public/client.
  • Ensure the welfare, health, safety, and care of all animals.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
