Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization serving southeast King County. Founded in 2007, MVYSO provides a place where students can excel musically, connect socially, and grow personally. We are dedicated to making music education accessible and impactful for every interested student.

JOB TITLE: Music Director and Symphony Orchestra Conductor
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
SALARY: $17,500/year
HOURS: Part time (average of about 10 hours per week) - Monday night rehearsals and all performances are required, additional hours will vary

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in conducting, music education, or related field
• Prior experience in orchestral conducting, working with advanced student musicians, and staff management
• Ability to work collaboratively with MVYSO administrative and conducting staff and coaches, board members, a diverse student population, and the community in Maple Valley and surrounding areas

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Advanced degree(s) in conducting, music education, or related field
• Extensive experience teaching strings
• Experience in curriculum design
• Established connections with other music educators in the south King County area

DUTIES:

• Guide MVYSO’s artistic direction and the educational and artistic development of our musicians
• Conduct MVYSO’s Symphony Orchestra
• Supervise and advise the conductors of MVYSO’s other orchestras and programs
• Select appropriate repertoire for concerts and community performances, ensuring the effective use of all orchestra musicians
• Spearhead the effort to recruit new students to MVYSO’s programs
• Oversee the audition and placement process, including music selection
• Foster a welcoming environment while maintaining a focus on musical excellence
• Engage qualified professional musicians as needed to fill coaching positions
• Assist with fundraising efforts and service projects
• Establish and maintain relationships with professional arts organizations, local private music teachers, and appropriate staff in surrounding school districts

• Two concert programs from within the last three years
• Rehearsal and performance recordings – links to representative samples of concert recordings, and rehearsal recordings if available. Recordings should total no more than 30 minutes.
