Legal Assistant I (FMLA Coverage - Temporary Position)

Criminal Law Office | Full-Time | Non-Exempt

If you like organized chaos, well-formatted documents, and being the person who quietly keeps everything running-this might be your kind of job.

We're looking for a Legal Assistant I to provide temporary FMLA coverage in a fast-paced criminal law office. You'll step in to support attorneys, keep cases moving, and make sure nothing slips through the cracks while a team member is on leave. Think of it as being the reliable pinch-hitter who already knows the playbook.

What You'll Be Doing

• Preparing, formatting, filing, and tracking legal documents (pleadings, motions, affidavits, subpoenas, warrants-you name it)
• Creating, maintaining, and organizing electronic and physical case files
• Using multiple court and justice-related databases to locate records and information
• Proofreading and typing dictated legal documents (40 WPM minimum, accuracy matters)
• Monitoring deadlines and helping cases progress on schedule
• Communicating with attorneys, law enforcement, victims, witnesses, and the public-professionally and tactfully
• Answering phones, directing visitors, and handling routine questions
• Managing everyday office tasks like scanning, filing, mail distribution, and data entry
• Archiving files according to retention schedules
• Pitching in on special projects or miscellaneous tasks as needed

What We're Looking For

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• One of the following:
• At least 1 year of experience as a legal secretary or legal assistant, or
• Completion of a legal assistant program, or
• Equivalent experience demonstrating the ability to perform the role effectively
• Ability to pass a background check
• Valid Washington State driver's license and acceptable driving record
• Must be bondable

• Working knowledge of legal terminology, criminal justice processes, and legal document preparation
• Strong typing, proofreading, and formatting skills
• Comfort navigating multiple databases and case management systems
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills
• Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion
• Professional, calm, and courteous-even when things get busy

Work Environment

This role is primarily office-based, with a mix of focused desk work and frequent interaction with people who may be under stress. Occasional lifting of files or boxes (up to 30 lbs) may be required.

• This is a temporary position intended to cover an approved FMLA leave
• Duration will align with the length of the leave
