These Programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as TRIO Programs because initially, there were just three programs Upward Bound (UB), Talent Search (TS), and Student Support Services (SSS). The number has expanded to include Educational Opportunity Centers, Ronald E, McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program, Upward Bound Math & Science, and Veterans Upward Bound.

The College Success Coach plays a critical role in fostering academic achievement, personal growth, and successful matriculation for students participating in the federally funded TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) and SSS-STEM programs. The Coach provides individualized and group coaching, advising, and support services to a varied caseload of eligible students, including first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities. The Coach helps students navigate the complexities of higher education, develop essential academic and life skills, and connect with campus resources to ensure their success from enrollment through graduation. Evening and occasional weekend hours are required.
Individualized Coaching and Support (75%):

  • Develop and maintain a caseload of 260 TRIO SSS and SSS-STEM participants, providing consistent and proactive coaching.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with students to assess academic progress, identify challenges, and develop individualized success plans.
  • Guide students in setting realistic academic, personal, and career goals, including exploring majors and careers, and creating pathways to achieve them.
  • Provide specialized academic and career support to TRIO participants, including guidance on academic concerns, research opportunities, internship placements, and career pathways.
  • Assist new students in transitioning to and navigating the collegiate experience, developing more sophisticated decision-making skills, and utilizing campus resources.
  • Educate and coach students in the development of self-advocacy skills, ensuring the coordination of resources and support systems to meet the various needs of students experiencing significant disruptions related to mental health, physical health, academic functioning, and/or psychosocial adjustment.
  • Coach students on effective study strategies, time management, test-taking skills, note-taking, and active learning techniques.
  • Assist students with financial aid literacy, scholarship searches, and understanding financial aid processes.
  • Offer guidance on personal development, stress management, self-advocacy, and building resilience.
  • Connect students with appropriate campus and community resources, including tutoring, counseling, disability services, career services, health services, and faculty mentors.
  • Provide intentional outreach to particular groups of students, such as students no longer in good academic standing
  • Monitor student academic standing, early alerts, and intervene proactively when students are struggling.

Data Management and Reporting (15%):
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of all student interactions, services provided, and progress towards goals using the designated university and program database (e.g., Blumen and Navigate).
  • Track and report on student outcomes, including GPA, retention rates, graduation rates, and transfer rates, as required by the TRIO grant.
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual performance reports and other grant-related documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal TRIO regulations and institutional policies.

Program Development and Facilitation (5%):
  • Develop and facilitate workshops, seminars, and group sessions on topics relevant to student success, such as academic skill-building, financial literacy, career development, graduate school preparation, and socio-emotional well-being.
  • Collaborate with other TRIO staff, university departments, and faculty to create and deliver engaging and effective programming.
  • Contribute to the development of program materials, resources, and communication strategies.

Collaboration and Outreach (5%):
  • Actively participate in departmental and university committees, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty, academic advisors, student support offices, and other campus and community partners to create a comprehensive support network for TRIO students.
  • Represent the TRIO SSS and SSS-STEM programs at campus events, orientations, and outreach activities.
  • Assist with the recruitment and selection of eligible TRIO SSS and SSS-STEM participants, ensuring compliance with federal guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Other Responsibilities:
  • The job necessitates attending events that require work after hours and on the weekends as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience:
  • Masters degree preferred from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Education, Educational Research, Humanities, Social Sciences, or related fields.
Other Required Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience advising and/or counseling low-income, first-generation or varied backgrounds in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals and objectives of the TRIO program;
  • Preference given to individuals who have overcome academic, economic, and cultural barriers similar to those of the program participants;
  • Experience maintaining a caseload of students or clients, with particular emphasis on underrepresented, adults or non-traditional populations in college or social service setting (intrusive advising or outreach casework);
  • Experience providing support services and/or working on retention and success initiatives.
  • Understand issues confronting under-represented students, ethnically varied, military veterans, non-traditional aged, parents, disabled students, etc., and help them navigate how and what resources to use and gain confidence and connection to achieve their personal and professional goals.
  • Must be a proficient multitasker and demonstrate competence and an appreciation for working with varied audiences. Conscientious attention to detail is essential. The job necessitates meeting deadlines and attending events that require work after hours and on the weekends as needed
  • Ability to use specified computer applications involving data processing, records maintenance, word processing, online applications, and educational technology including learning management systems.
  • Ability to perform multiple responsibilities simultaneously, to work in a self-directed environment, and to plan and organize on both a daily and long-term basis;
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with students from low-income, first-generation college backgrounds.
